A/c moved off the runway, unlocking the tail wheel and turned slightly to port. On applying brakes to turn the a/c back to starboard so as to run alongside the runway, the pilot found the brakes effective. Pilot gave a burst of port engine to turn to assist and immediately closed the throttle as the ground speed had increased, hitting a small ditch, then struck rough ground causing the starboard undercarriage to collapse and the starboard engine coming to rest on a small mould of rubble. A/c swung to port and full opposite rudder and brake pressure had been applied to correct it. As the a/c began to turn off the runway when the warning horn commenced and a few seconds later the tail wheel collapsed. A/c was the last due over the target 0340hrs local to release a flare and to bomb. W/O Pratt and Whitney Twin Wasp S3C4-G#29428 and #29478. Post war, 1946, it was discovered that A9-509 had crashed in flames 100 yards near the east end of the Penfoei Strip. It was established that only two, F/Sgt Hamilton and F/Sgt Wallace, had parachuted from the aircraft before it crashed. F/Sgt Hamilton had died instanly on contact of the ground, and F/Sgt Wallace, badly burned, survived his low altitude opening was taken to the Naval Hospital at Koepang where he died the following day(10/04/44). He was cremated by the Japanese, but the Army investigation team stated this may not be true and that the unidentified body buried with F/Sgt Hamilton may have been him. Post war, as stated by the 16 Australian War Graves Unit (Koepang, Timor), F/Sgt Hamilton was buried there on that location where he landed by the Japanese, along with another unidentified body. Both F/Sgt Sandwell and F/Sgt Keon were killed and consumed in the aircraft crash fire. Note: two a/c went missing on this mission, refer A9-541 NA-K. |

On the way the weather precluded this and the formation struck the secondary target, Palmalmal Mission in the Jacquinot Bay Area. Following a formation bombing, each a/c then did individual strafing runs then left the area. A9-517 was last seen over low over the target strafing and failed to return to base. Coded DD-H. 0840hrs 25/03/45 took off from Madang armed with 4 x 250lb GP bombs on an armed reconnaissance with instructions to bomb and strafe targets of opportunity. ETA on return to base was to be 1205hrs. At 1045hrs a radar plot of an unidentified a/c was observed 10 miles northwest of Hansa Bay. When overdue, a Beaufort took off for an unsuccessful search at 1530hrs per F/O Ross in A9-536 for three hours from Madang to 144º East to a depth of ten miles seaward. Also included was from Awar to a position 25 miles south to coast 144º East. Four more searches were carried out the following day by a Catalina of 111ASR Flight (RAAF)and three more Beauforts from Madang. On the 28/03/45 another Beaufort mad a final search. A/c deemed missing in Sepik area, New Guinea. Postwar, on 01/03/46 as advised by natives, a/c wreck was located 03º 50' South/144º 26' East near the Sepik River, via the Madjop Canal near Murik Lagoon, a mangrove swamp south of Mindan Village PNG some 500 yards inland. A/c was identified by A9 Serial and one pair of ID Discs per "410544". Combined remains were recovered by RAAF Boat 016-11 to War Graves Unit at Lae for Burial collectively Graves #12-14, Plot N, Row A at Lae War Cemetery by mid 1946. |

The crew released the dinghy and started to head for shore. The Japanese opened up with machine guns and the first burst killed the observer FLGOFF Sydney Louis Anderson 410192 outright. The second burst holed the dinghy and the three remaining crew started to swim along the dinghy. The third burst of fire collapsed the dinghy completely and killed the pilot FLGOFF Lyle Manhire McLaren 416874 and wounded FLGOFF Ray Graetz 417175 (WAG). Graetz started swimming westward away from the fire and the other WAG FLTSGT Francis Maloney 410995 was last seen swimming seaward. Graetz spent the next 8 days in the jungle trying to return to base when he was rescued. Graetz was awarded the Military Medal for his courage and resource during this adventure. |

The aircraft was on a courier mission and when coming into land, it was discovered that the plane was on fire. The pilot ditched into the sea about a mile offshore. The plane broke into half near the rear turret. The crew plus one US soldier (passenger) escaped without injury.
